Fred Perry Laurel - Spring/Summer 10

Fred Perry is the only brand that's consistently been sought out by youth subculture from the 1950s right up to today. The brand has updated the attitude and styling of two key musical movements: the mid-60s guitar bands, and the post-punk scene of the early-80s. These periods shared a similar sharp, slimmed down silhouette including small collars, narrow ties, and slim, flat-front trousers. The collections main influence is the look and silhouette of the sixties, a decade dominated by youth when British subcultures influenced the world’s fashion and music industry.

The Spring/Summer 10 collection delivers on the brand's strong reputation with classic Fred Perry pieces like the Harrington jacket and polo shirt sitting alongside Gingham shirts and ink blue knits.

YMC - You Must Create

Formed in London in1995 by Fraser Moss and Jimmy Collins, YMC has a remarkably strong identity for a brand still in its teenage years. Refusing to be swayed by fashion trends, YMC resolutely focuses on creating stylish, functional and modern clothing allowing the product, rather than the marketing to speak for itself.

YMC’s main source of inspiration comes from Raymond Loewy, ‘the man who designed America’. Loewy is responsible for design classics such as the greyhound bus and the branding for Lucky Stripe and Shell. When once asked how he saw the future of design Loewy replied “you must create your own style”; from this simple manifesto YMC or “You Must Create” takes its name as well as its design cues, applying them to wardrobe staples to create a highly distinctive and stylish look. In 2010 YMC launched its ‘Basics’ range, further cementing it as one of the most wearable labels around.

Micmacs - Out Now

This is the latest offering from visionary director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amelie, Delicatessen). It is a typically dazzling cinematic event, with few directors able to create such imaginative and inventive on-screen worlds. But aside from the aesthetic success of the film, it produces a pacey, edge-of-your-seat story about one man’s quest to destroy two large weapons manufacturers. A distinctively breathtaking and witty fantasy satire you simply have to see.

Diesel Spring/Summer 10 - Fire, Air, Water

Diesel was founded in Italy, 1978 by Renzo Rosso. From day one he gave his open minded design team broad stylistic freedom and the mission to create an apparel line that would resonate with independent people who follow their own unique path in life – a brand for style makers who express their individuality through the way they dress.

The result is dynamic, sexy styling and highly distinctive and provocative marketing, which has made Diesel synonymous with youth culture worldwide. Best known for denim, it is Diesel’s innovation in style, fabric and manufacturing that sets it apart ; in fact, these attributes permeate the brand and all its collections, as does Diesel’s rock n’ roll soul which can be seen in its signature deconstructed style.

For Spring/Sumer 10 Diesel takes its inspiration from the contrasting elements of fire, water and air; tops are emblazoned with flame graphics, shades of misty white to azure blue wash over lightweight denim and sequins look ready to melt on t-shirts and dresses.

Massive Attack - Heligoland - Out Now

The Bristol duo return with this rather dark, gothic album which has to be their best release since Mezzanine all of 12 years ago.

This is Massive Attack doing what they do best - gloomy chords, crashing drums, soaring synths and off-break beats, with a few new ingredients thrown in to create a modern, relevant take on their classic sound. This is a thoroughly consistent album and only enhanced by the likes of Damon Albarn and Elbow’s Guy Garvey lending their vocals to an enticing ensemble - well worth the wait!

Famous for her exquisite and wittily designed handbags and accessories, the name Lulu Guinness has become synonymous with old school girly glamour.

For Spring/Summer 10 stand out pieces are the Columbia Road flower market bags and the snakeskin and perspex lip clutch bags.

Lonelady - Nerve Up - Out Now

Nerve Up is a D.I.Y project from Mancunian Julie Campbell.

The album, her solo debut, was recorded in an abandoned mill on the outskirts of her home town. There is an obvious comparison drawn to the likes of Joy Division and Early New Order with an evident angst portrayed through simple pop-rock songs. Scratchy guitars, tinny drums, emotive vocals and a hint of synth wherever needed. Simple, but packed with substance.

Timberland Boot Company - Designed By Time

Launched in 2005, Timberland Boot Company draws inspiration from its parent’s rich heritage and the industrialisation that took place in New England and Northern England between 1900 and 1945. This was a period of significant social and political change, an era of hardship and industrialisation where goods, especially clothing and footwear, had to meet increasingly demanding requirements. Repair and adaptation were necessities; with each new incarnation goods evolved from mere object to loyal friend, with growing affection attached by their owners and an historical significance that is worthy of being retold today.

Timberland Boot Company pays homage to this important period in history and the shoes and boots that played their part in the struggle. Workwear shoes and boots are recreated, retaining the quality, durability and craftsmanship that characterise Timberland Boot Company and the goods of the time, updated with a modern sensibility that results in a contemporary look for today.

PRPS - Bruised But Never Broken, A Product With A Purpose

Born into a hunting and logging family, PRPS founder Donwan Harrell has an innate understanding of functional clothing; quality and durability are of paramount importance and each and every detail on every item is constructed for a reason. These principles are fundamental to PRPS and the labels ambition to produce the finest jeans for the most discerning denim enthusiasts around the world.

This quest begins in Africa, where the perfect conditions for growing cotton can be found in Benin, Senegal, Zimbabwe and Ghana. PRPS cotton is personally selected and inspected by local farmers before being shipped to Japan, home to the world’s finest artisan denim manufacturers. Here, the cotton is woven into one-of-a-kind masterpieces on vintage Levis shuttle looms, the PRPS custom made purple selvedge a quality hallmark on all PRPS jeans. Every detail is painstakingly produced by hand in order to replicate the aging and distressing process valued so highly by denim aficionados, while seasonal trends are ignored in recognition of the timeless quality of jeans and their ability to transcend fashion fads. Inspiration is instead taken from military, workwear and hunting apparel with additional references incorporated into the PRPS repertoire with each new collection.

Our Legacy SS10 - 'Hidden Harvest'

Swedish label Our Legacy started out in 2005 with a small t-shirt collection that quickly gained recognition from Scandinavia’s top stores. Three years later Our Legacy founders Christopher and Jockum launched their first full collection, their easy to wear, ‘thrown together’ style appealing to effortlessly cool Scandinavians and style conscious customers further away from home in The US, Europe and Japan.

Rather than be led by seasonal trends, the Our Legacy starting point is to focus on classically designed pieces constructed from the best fabrics, which are typically sourced from Italy, Portugal and The UK. There’s a strong heritage feel which arises from the choice of fabric and classic design, yet playful and irreverent deconstruction gives Our Legacy a relaxed, almost nonchalant appeal.

Odd Molly Loves You

From humble beginnings come great things; Odd Molly was founded in Stockholm, 2002 over a cup of coffee. Almost a decade on and the label is a global success story with an ever growing following of loyal women who have fallen for Odd Molly’s charms.

The name Odd Molly comes from the time when founder Per Holknekt was a professional figure skater in America during the 1980’s. He remembers the hoards of female fans vying for the attention of the male skaters at the big competitions. There was one who always stood out. Nick-named Odd Molly, her self confidence, laughter and charm would win her way with the boys. These attributes are at the heart of the brand today, with uninhibited design and a mission to make women look and feel great the starting point for Odd Molly designs. Cosy pastel colours, delicate embroidery and heart warming details like silk bows and hidden stitched messages are what make each piece special – clothes to look and feel good in.
